STAGNATION OF LIBRARY SERVICES IN NIGERIA: IMMEDIATE AND REMOTE CAUSES
Abstract
The primary goal of libraries is to provide reading materials that meet user needs, significantly influenced by factors such as financial support, staff commitment, and professional competence. Access to quality information is essential for both government and individuals, impacting decision-making processes and societal progress. Libraries in Nigeria have four major responsibilities: supporting government operations, facilitating self-education, enhancing formal education, and providing resources for public growth. Currently, Nigerian libraries struggle to meet the increasing demand for information due to inadequacies in quantity, quality, and format. Recommendations include retraining librarians in automation, familiarization with computer technology, curriculum updates in library schools, reviving co-operative training initiatives, and advocating for policy changes to improve access to educational resources. This approach aims to enhance the cultural and technological advancement of Nigerian society.
