STORAGE, ORGANIZATION AND EXPLOITATION OF NON-PRINT MATERIALS IN NIGERIAN LIBRARIES

Abstract

The article discusses the challenges faced by library authorities in Nigeria concerning the storage, organization, and utilization of non-print materials, which constitute a small fraction of total library resources. Cultural familiarity with print media has led to underutilization of audiovisual resources, which users perceive as complex. Despite heavy investments in non-print materials, their value remains unappreciated in educational and recreational contexts. The article emphasizes the need for equal availability of print and non-print resources, citing Anthony Hugh Thompson's assertion on integrating diverse materials for effective library services. It also addresses the varying organizational schemes for non-print materials and the ongoing debate over their integration with traditional print collections, highlighting the necessity of user needs assessment to enhance library services.
